IB: Reaction to same-sex marriage bill’s passage in IL

Reaction to the Illinois General Assembly’s November 5 passage of SB 10, the "Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act":

“I'm personally very disappointed in the state legislature's action, and in its ramifications for churches and their freedom of speech and religious expression. I believe Baptist churches in Illinois will continue to stand on the Bible's definition of marriage as a sacred covenant between one man and one woman, while continuing to reach out in love with the Gospel message to all people.” – IBSA Executive Nate Adams

“We as Christians have allowed the government to take over what God had instituted. Marriage was God's idea. God's plan is one man and one woman. Don't be surprised when the government decides to approve other ungodly unions.” – Paul E. Tirey, www.Facebook.com/IllinoisBaptist

”Praying for our state.” – David Lee Van Bebber, www.Facebook.com/IllinoisBaptist

“I think we have a wonderful day for the state of Illinois here. It should be a proud moment for everyone in our state, but it should be especially a very happy moment for the thousands of lesbian and gay families across our state who now know they are on a very short path to achieving equality and all of the protections our law allows.” – Rep. Greg Harris (D-Chicago) and chief sponsor of SB 10, press conference following IL House vote

“I’ve heard nothing today about the Scriptures. The only thing I’ve heard is about human rights. So I guess we’ve backed away from our heritage in this nation which we seem to do quite regularly for the expediency of what we wish to do at the moment. And ladies and gentlemen, that’s pride. That’s a belief that you’re better than the very foundation…which we find in the Scriptures.” – Rep. Dwight Kay (R-Glen Carbon), IL House floor debate

“Pope Francis of the Roman Catholic Church was quoted as saying ‘If someone is gay and searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?’ He has articulated the basics of my thinking on this issue. For those who happen to be gay and living in a very harmonious, productive relationship, but illegal, who am I to judge if it should be illegal?” – Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago), IL House floor debate

“Why are religious rights only granted to priests, pastors and rabbis? What about our rights? This is about individual religious rights.” – Rep. David Reis, R-Willow Hill, IL House floor debate

"Michelle and I are overjoyed for all the committed couples in Illinois whose love will now be as legal as ours — and for their friends and family who have long wanted nothing more than to see their loved ones treated fairly and equally under the law."President Barack Obama (D)

“This bill is the worst in the U.S. in protecting religious liberty. It does not have the religious protections most of us agree should happen.” Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton), IL House floor debate

“Even if the legal definition of marriage was changed, those two people will never be married in God’s eyes.”Rep. Mary Flowers (D-Chicago), IL House floor debate
